100% local and organic: closing the protein gap for poultry in the ICOPP Project Organic Eprints
Nelder, Rebecca; Smith, Jo; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce.
A key challenge in improving the sustainability of organic poultry production is meeting the required levels of nutrients from locally sourced organic feeds. 100% organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015. The ICOPP project brings together knowledge, from 10 EU countries, of local feeds for monogastrics and their wider impact on growth, health and welfare and the environment to identify feeding strategies which comply with organic principles. This poster will report on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK by FAI and ORC to investigate the impact of algae, peas and lupins on broiler performance and welfare.

100% Organic Feed for Pigs – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Gerrard, Catherine L.; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Zaralis, Konstantinos.
Current regulations for organic pig and poultry production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns that a 100 % organic diet would be unable to meet the demand for the essential amino acids lysine and methionine. 100 % organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, and so there is an urgent need to develop economically profitable feeding strategies based on organic feed across Europe. Feeding trials carried out with Gloucester old spot pigs in the UK found that there was no significant difference in the weight gains across the diets until the last week of the trial when there a significant difference in weight increase for the male pigs on the bean diet. This suggests that a...

100% Organic Feed for Poultry – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L.; Smith, Jo; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Bright, Ashleigh.
Current regulations for organic monogastric production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns about meeting the demand for the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. However, 100 % organic diets will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, so there is a need to develop feeds which will supply the required level of nutrients and support high animal health and welfare. This paper reports on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK to investigate the impact of three 100 % organic diets: a control diet with globally sourced ingredients, a diet based on locally sourced (i.e. within Europe) organic ingredients, and a diet based on locally sourced organic ingredients and algae. The results of...

A comparison of soil and water properties in organic and conventional farming systems in England Organic Eprints
Hathaway-Jenkins, L. J.; Sakrabani, R; Pearce, Bruce; Whitmore, A. P; Godwin, R. J..
Organic farming and improvements to agricultural sustainability are often seen as synonymous. However, an extensive European review demonstrated that in practice this is not always true. This study aims to compare the status of soil and water properties between separate fields managed in either an organic or a conventional manner. Soil samples were collected from 16 pairs of farms, throughout England, with both arable and grass fields within each pair on similar soil type. Chemical (nutrients, pesticides, herbicides) and physical (aggregate stability, field capacity, shear strength, soil organic matter, infiltration rates) soil properties were measured in four main soil texture classes in organic and conventional fields. The physical soil properties varied...

A review of knowledge of the potential impacts of GMOs on organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Dale, Phillip; Clarke, Belinda; Fontes, Eliana; Martin, Wolfe; Pearce, Bruce; Welsh, James.
The organic movement believes that organic agriculture, by its nature, cannot involve the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This has been incorporated into EU regulations which state that there is no place in organic agriculture for GMOs. The aim in this review is to consider the ways in which the use of GMOs in agriculture in the UK and internationally might impact on organic farming. It does not address the controversy about the rights or wrongs of GMO’s per se. The subjects covered are based on a set of questions raised at the beginning of the study. The review is based primarily on evidence from peer-reviewed literature. The report is based on a number of themes, as follows: • Fate of DNA in soil • Fate of DNA in livestock feed...

Agronomic performance of two generations (F12 and F13) of thirteen winter wheat composite cross wheat populations with differing cultivation histories in 2014/15. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Boening, Andreas; Elsner, Maren; Finckh, Maria R.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Nuijten, E.; Messmer, Monika; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Goldringer, I.; Péter, Mikó; Megyeri, Maria; Borgen, Anders; Rasmussen, Søren K.; Pearce, Bruce; Wolfe, Martin.
As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints
Smith, Laurence; Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Woodward, Lawrence; Fowler, Sue; Measures, Mark.
The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Breeding for diversity – political implications and new pathways for the future Organic Eprints
Andersen, Regine; Bocci, Riccardo; Howlett, Sally; Pearce, Bruce; Dunsire, Gaina; Rey, Frederic; Nuijten, E.; Andersen, Rikke Thomle; Pedersen, Tove Mariegaard; Miceli, F.; Slabe, Anamarija.
At present, around 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector, lacking important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. Populations with a high level of genetic diversity are promising for OA (organic agriculture) conditions due to their adaptation, resilience and performance stability in different environments. Organic farming will benefit from cultivars (populations, varieties) that can cope with multiple stresses such as weeds, diseases, pests, climate change and low nitrogen input from manure. In the COBRA project (Coordinating Organic Plant Breeding Activities for diversity), plant genetic diversity and its potential have been investigated from both an...

Developing modern multifunctional agroforestry systems for sustainable intensification Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Pearce, Bruce; Döring, Thomas F.; Wolfe, M S.
Agroforestry is a land-use system that integrates trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock production. It has been identified by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD, 2008) as a ‘win-win’ approach that balances the production of commodities (food, feed, fuel, fibre, etc.) with non-commodity outputs such as environmental protection and cultural and landscape amenities. This paper will review the potential of agroforestry as part of a multifunctional working landscape in temperate regions, and will consider management and policy implications of widespread adoption of this form of land-use.

Does the Source of Chicks have an Impact on Performance of Birds within Organic Table Bird Production Systems ? Organic Eprints
Pegg, Vanessa; Pearce, Bruce.
Sheepdrove Organic Farm wanted to know whether the source of day old chicks and brooding and production period would have an impact on their enterprise. Sheepdrove Organic Farm wanted to know whether the source of day old chicks and brooding and production period would have an impact on their enterprise. An experiment was undertaken using two different sources of day old chicks and on two sites. 1000 day old chicks from Maurice Millard were exchanged with 1000 organic chicks from Devon Foods. These chicks were then put through the Sheepdrove (SOF) and Devon Foods Bradbury Barton (BB) organic production systems and weighed every week until depletion. The two systems were not identical and there were slight variations between the SOF and BB systems. BB had...

Final Report: Coordinating Organic Breeding Activities for Diversity - COBRA Organic Eprints
Pearce, Bruce.
Plant breeding is crucial in creating organic crop production systems that can better cope with interacting stresses such as pests and diseases (especially seed-borne diseases), weeds and the increasingly erratic and unpredictable variation in climate and weather. In this context, COBRA aimed to support and develop organic plant breeding and seed production with a focus on increasing the use and potential of plant material with high genetic diversity in cereals (wheat and barley) and grain legumes (pea and faba bean), through coordinating, linking and expanding existing breeding and research. Although systems based on high, within-crop diversity have shown promising results in organic systems and are now subject to intensive research, their benefits cannot...

Further Development of Methodologies for Sustainability Assessment and Monitoring in Organic/Ecological Agriculture Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Pearce, Bruce.
In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in assessing the sustainability of agriculture in terms of its social, environmental and economic impact and a number of indicators and tools are used. Measurements take place at the farm or product level and indicators can be outcome related e.g. number of butterfly species present, or management related e.g. percentage of fields with margins growing wildflowers to attract butterflies. Given its underlying ethos, the organic/ecological agriculture sector should aim to be at the forefront of sustainability. The development of assessment approaches and recent discussions within the movement have identified continuous improvement towards best practice in sustainability to be one of the important...

Implementation Action Plan for organic food and farming research Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Niggli, Urs; Pearce, Bruce; Schlüter, Marco; Schmid, Otto; Cuoco, Eduardo; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The Implementation Action Plan completes TP Organics’ trilogy of key documents of the Research Vision to 2025 (Niggli et al 2008) and the Strategic Research Agenda (Schmid et al 2009). The Implementation Action Plan addresses important areas for a successful implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. It explores the strength of Europe’s organic sector on the world stage with about one quarter of the world’s organic agricultural land in 2008 and accounting for more than half of the global organic market. The aims and objectives of organic farming reflect a broad range of societal demands on the multiple roles of agriculture and food production of not only producing commodities but also ecosystem services. These are important for Europe’s economic...

Is Weather (temperature) Having a Major Influence on the Final Weights of Chickens in Sheepdrove Organic Farm Organic Silvo-Poultry System? Organic Eprints
Pearce, Bruce.
It was thought that weather, and in particular air temperature, could be a major factor in SOF poultry failing to reach its target market weight of 1.83kg kill out weight. This study used data form the SOF processing plant for the average bird weight for the twice weekly processing of the birds and hourly air temperature from an automated weather station sited on SOF which was averaged over the seven weeks prior to processing (the time the birds spend in the field sheds. The data between 20th January and 3rd September 2003 showed that there was no relationship between air temperature and final bird weight.

Legume based plant mixtures for delivery of multiple ecosystem services: An overview of benefits Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Baddeley, J. A.; Brown, RJ; Collins, R; Crowley, Oliver; Cuttle, Steve; McCalman, Heather; Pearce, Bruce; Roderick, Stephen; Stobart, Ron; Storkey, Jonathan; Watson, Christine; Wolfe, Martin; Jones, H E.
As costs for mineral fertilizers rise, legume-based leys are recognised as a potential alternative nitrogen source for crops. Here we demonstrate that including species-rich legume-based leys in the rotation helps to maximize synergies between agricultural productivity and other ecosystem services. By using functionally diverse plant species mixtures these services can be optimised and fine-tuned to regional and farm-specific needs. Field experiments run over three years at multiple locations showed that the stability of ley performance was greater in multi-species mixtures than in legume monocultures. In addition, mixing different legume species in the ley helps to suppress both early and late weeds. Further, combining complementary phenologies of...
